Course Description:
In this hands-on course, you’ll dive into the colorful and creative world of gel plate printing. Using charcoal, acrylic paints, stencils, and special layering techniques, you’ll learn to create beautiful one of a kind monoprints. We’ll explore ghost printing, layering, and even incorporate a Japanese tissue paper collage technique. By the end, you’ll have a series of prints and the skills to continue your gel plate journey on your own.
Course Outline:
Session 1: Introduction and Basics
Overview of materials and tools
Getting to know the gel plate and acrylic paints
Basic print pulling techniques and first monoprints
Introduction to using masks and stencils for simple designs
Session 2: Layering and Ghost Prints
Techniques for layering multiple colors and patterns
How to create and use ghost prints for subtle effects
Experimenting with charcoal and markers to add depth
Session 3: Incorporating Collage and Japanese Techniques
Introduction to chigiri-e: using torn Japanese paper in collage
Combining collage elements with gel prints
Adhering tissue paper and layering it into your compositions
Session 4: Finishing Techniques and Creative Exploration
Embellishments
Refining your prints

About Bridget Murphy
Jennifer is a founding member of Great Falls Studios and the Great Falls school of Art, Jennifer has been teaching classes and workshops in metal clay, jewelry making, and mixed media for over 20 years. Known for mixing traditional techniques with modern technology such as laser cutters and digital design, Jennifer presents and teaches specialty workshops at International Conferences including AMCAW (The Alliance for Metal Clay Arts Worldwide). A graduate of the University of Maryland Opera Program with a degree in voice, Jennifer supports a broad range of arts and currently sits on the board of Dance Aspen was a past chair of the McLean Project for the Arts annual gala.
