Presented by the Baltimore Marathi Mandal, Khadya Jatra (meaning "Food Fair" in Marathi) is a vibrant celebration of the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Maharashtra — one of India's largest and most culturally dynamic states.

If you've explored Thai, Mexican, or Italian regional cuisines, get ready to discover something just as exciting closer to home: the extraordinary variety of food that comes from a single Indian state.

What is Maharashtra?

Maharashtra is a state on the western coast of India, home to over 120 million people and one of the country's most diverse culinary landscapes. It's the state that gave the world Mumbai — India's most iconic city — but its food story goes far beyond street food. From the coconut-laden coastal kitchens of Konkan to the fiery meat dishes of Vidarbha in the interior, Maharashtra is home to at least six distinct regional cuisines, each with its own ingredients, techniques, and flavors.

Khadya Jatra brings all of them together in one afternoon in Baltimore.

A Culinary Journey Across Maharashtra

Each food stall at Khadya Jatra represents a different region of this magnificent state:

• Konkan — Coastal, coconut-rich, seafood-forward flavors from the Arabian Sea coastline
• Vidarbha  — Bold, fiery, and deeply spiced dishes from central Maharashtra
• Marathwada  — Earthy, rustic, and hearty cooking from the Deccan plateau
• Khandesh  — Unique spice blends and flavors found nowhere else in India
• Paschim Maharashtra  — The heartland of classic Maharashtrian home cooking (Pune / Nashik region)
• Mumbai  — The street food capital of India, beloved worldwide
