Course Description:

Whether you are just beginning to study drawing or are an artist with a lifetime of experience, portraiture has always been considered one of the most expressive and rewarding subjects to study.

Starting from the basics, this class will help students develop their technical drawing abilities and develop their understanding of the human form through a combination of long pose portrait drawing sessions with live models and in-depth anatomy studies with medical reference skulls. While the focus of this class will be developing a structural understanding of the portrait, students throughout the class will also be introduced to various contemporary artists who use portraiture in expressive and inspiring ways and shown how lessons in portraiture can be applied beyond the human form.

Bio

William Demaria is a Baltimore based artist who began his career with the study of alla prima and Flemish style portrait painting. While his current art practice has diverged into artwork based in the landscape, lessons he learned from these studies serve as a major source of inspiration for his current artwork. Demaria finds the process of creating artwork itself to be beautiful and has always been interested in studying the way artwork is made. He believes that every student, no matter their skill level, has an individual voice that should be developed.
