Learn how to create beautiful frames for your apartment with William D in this weekly event 

When: Tuesday, February 27, 2024

Time:  5:00 p.m.  to 7:00 p.m. 

Location: Washington Printmakers Gallery,
                1675 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest Washington, DC 20007 

Class Description: 

Budget frames cost $200-$300 and high-quality frames cost $400-$800. For any artist, framing is always a pervasive problem and sometimes a crippling cost. Fortunately, with a little bit of knowledge and the right tools and materials, it doesn’t have to be you can build the highest possible quality frame for approximately $40. This class will cover everything from basic woodworking with hand tools to cutting glass and archivally matting artwork. By the end of this class, you will have a complete frame and all of the knowledge you need to make your own frames going forward.

Note:  

Students will be expected to bring their own artwork to frame Artwork must be under 20” x 26”. The price of class reflects the cost of artwork framed with UV protective glass. The maximum dimension frame that glass is practical is 24” x 30”.

If any artist is interested in larger, the price of class will be adjusted to reflect the cost of UV Plexi.

Schedule: Tuesday 3-5 pm

5 weeks of class

Feb 27- Mar 26

Syllabus: For 5 week class

  • Week 1 (Feb 27)

            Cut and Glue Frame stock.

  • Week 2 (Mar 5)

            Finish Frame stock & cut mat board.

  • Week 3 (Mar 12)

            Cut glass, Cut spacers, Cut strainer.

  • Week 4 (Mar 19)

            Mount artwork, Cut Backing, & Assemble frame.

  • Week 5 (Mar 26)

             Office hours/ overflow

Essential Supplies: 

  • No need to purchase new tools and materials if you already have your own.

1. Japanese pull saw (Western style saws with thick kerfs make dados in strainers difficult) - Click Here 

2. Miter 45 Try Square (cheaper are available but Kinex is a trustworthy brand) - Click Here

3. Respirator - Click Here 

Recommended supplies:

  • Not needed for the class but essential for home use

           1. Miter Trimmer - Click Here 

           2. Ratchet Straps - Click Here

 **Mask optional except when a respirator is required.**
