Event Description:
For centuries, people worldwide have celebrated the dynamic relationship between humanity and Earth's magnificent rivers. Rivers shape the cultures and lives of millions, their stories intertwined with the waters they live alongside.
From indigenous communities living in harmony with the rivers to modern traders and artisans who depend on them, each river has a powerful narrative driven by its unique nature.
Tarangini, the ancient river known as Kaveri in Karnataka and Ponni in Tamil Nadu, flows through the Deccan plateau of South India, from the Western Ghats to the Bay of Bengal. Born from a boon to serve the people, she is revered as the source of life, removing sins, bestowing blessings, and inspiring artists along her banks.
Nrityakalya Dance Company's Artistic Director, Janani Narayanan, presents "Tarangini - The Ancient River," a thematic dance journey following Kaveri's course and the people she encounters. The production captures the essence of Kaveri's story with original music by Smt Asha Ramesh, production guidance by Dr Lakshmi Ramaswamy, and lyrics from ancient Sangam texts to modern composers.
Talented musicians and instrumentalists bring the lyrics to life, enhancing the emotions and movements of the vibrant young dancers. Celestial costumes and real-time sets transport the audience through time, from the Sangam era to the mythological stories, the ancient settlers of Deccan, the political cries for Kaveri, the medieval glory along her banks, and finally to the prosperity of Kaveripoompattinam.
Experience the nostalgia and beauty of Tarangini - The Ancient River, a captivating journey through time and culture.
